Three Rainbow Mountains (Palcoyo) on a beautiful day tour suitable for all fitness levels, Take a short walk to the stunning striated mountain views and visit the picturesque villages in the area
Palccoyo (or Palcoyo, depending who you ask) Rainbow Mountain is relatively unheard of by travellers, with pretty much all of the tours offering the standard trip to the Vinicunca Mountain. Where Palccoyo is located there is actually an entire mountain range, littered with different rainbow mountains.
Looking for a more off the beaten track experience whilst still not wanting to miss one of Peru’s must-see attractions.
If you’ve looked at any photos of Vinicunca, you’ve likely noticed that they were all taken from the exact same vantage point. This is because you only see the rainbow-colored rock formations at the climactic finale of the trek, as the trail passes through beautiful but mundane-by-comparison pasturelands and typical mountain scenes. A visit to Palcoyo, on the other hand, brings you immediately into some of the most otherworldly scenery you’ll ever lay eyes on.
The main attraction is, of course, a grouping of three rainbow-colored peaks for which the site is known. After you’ve snapped your obligatory photos, you’ll be equally enthralled by the surrounding Red Valley with its surreal Mars-like terrain. The nearby bosque de piedras (stone forest) also adds to the unearthly feel of the scene. After you’ve spent a few minutes here, you’ll understand why it’s so special. There are few places in the world so beautiful, and unlike the more famous Rainbow Mountain you’ll have this place almost completely to yourself.
This hike is accessible for all ages and hiking levels. The highest altitude on the tour is 5000m (16400ft) so we recommend a few days in Cusco prior to the tour to acclimatize.
We will pick you up very early from your hotel (4:00am) and set out on a drive through the South Valley. The drive to the trailhead at Palcoyo is about 4 hours where we will have our breakfast. After breakfast we take a gradual uphill walk (30-45 minutes) to the Palcoyo Pass (5000m/16,400ft). Here you will have spectacular panoramic views of three Rainbow Mountain Palcoyo and Ausangate. We will spend approximately 1 hour at the pass taking pictures, having a snack, and enjoying the spectacular view. Once we are done enjoying the scenery we walk back down the way we came. We now take our private transport to the village called Checacupe (approx 1 hour) where we will enjoy our box lunch and explore the small bridge there. After taking some time to walk across the bridge (30 min), take pictures and enjoy the area we take our private transport back to your hotel in Cusco (about a 2 to 2.5 hour drive).
